AMSA (American Medical Student Association) has been inspiring a community of future physicians through education and advocacy for more than 65 years, and will be hosting their Annual Convention, March 31 – April 3, 2016 in Washington, DC at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City. Today, Terri is the proud mother of two young men. However, for fifteen years she believed her younger son was her daughter.

In this moving presentation, Terri shares how she and her husband came to understand and accept that their child is transgender. After nearly losing their son to suicide, and years of depression, anxiety, and bullying, they learned that their child’s gender identity was the source of his pain. The challenges of supporting their child’s transition from female to male taught them many things, and Terri reveals what she wishes they – and their healthcare providers – had known.

As a parent, and advocate, Terri has come to understand the harsh realities of being transgender in our society and the disparities that exist in healthcare for transgender and gender-nonconforming people. Her family’s life-changing experience will open hearts and minds, while also offering best practices for medical professionals.
