In our book, Allies & Angels, we write about the significance of this song. Although our oldest son, Billy, wrote How to Live to reflect the lessons learned through his own life experiences and recovery, the song has become symbolic of how we have all learned how to live. The lyrics apply not only to Billy, but also to Drew, Terri and Vince.
We’ve included the lyrics in our book for all readers to enjoy. Billy has generously made How to Live available for free through the Allies & Angels store during our Indiegogo Campaign.

Lyrics
I’m so far away from
The boy I used to be
But that ain’t me
Was never one to walk too tall
But the strength to carry on
Gets me through it all
So what I’m trying to say
Is I’m better off this way
Keep moving on
‘Cause I’ve learned to
Pick it up, break it down
Try again, I’m making ground
Don’t give up, pull it through
And always to myself be true
Good and bad are relative
I give it all I have to give
I think I’ve finally learned how to live
I may be a wreck when
I’m thinking all alone
But still I grow
And for every step back I take
I take two more in its place
Soon I’m gone
So I’m just trying to say
That I’m better off this way
Keep moving on
‘Cause I’ve learned to
Pick it up, break it down
Try again, I’m making ground
Don’t give up, pull it through
And always to myself be true
Good and bad are relative
I give it all I have to give
I think I’ve finally learned how to live
Our special appreciation goes out to Billy for allowing us to share How to Live.
